Casio recently introduced the first multi-band atomic time watch - the Casio Pathfinder PAW1200 Multi-Band Atomic Solar Triple Sensor Watch - a big name for a big watch, literally! This watch is the ultimate timepiece for the continent-hopping outdoor enthusiast, whether you are climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, hiking the Grand Canyon or skiing the Swiss Alps - where ever you choose to go, this watch can keep pace!
Now don't get confused by the term that Casio chose to use for this new release. The "multi-band" refers to the four atomic time radio "band" transmissions that this watch can calibrate with - it has nothing to do with multiple wrist "bands".
Casio has been making single-band atomic time watches for several years now, starting with the Wave Ceptor collection and then adding some atomic time models to the G-Shock collection. Up until now, you could usually only get a watch that was set to receive one specific atomic clock radio frequency - there is one G-Shock model that works in the US and Japan.
If you wanted your watch to work in the US, you had to buy a model that would calibrate with the atomic clock in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The signal from Ft. Collins can be received within a radius of about 1,500 miles. That basically covers North America. However, if you went to Europe or Asia, your watch would not be able to calibrate. Now you can wear a watch that will work on three continents - North America, Europe and most of Asia. Folks in Australia and Africa are still going to have to wait, sorry (and if anyone is reading this in Antarctica, please let me know right away!)
This watch can actually calibrate with two different atomic clocks in Europe - one in Germany and one in England, as well as two in Japan and the atomic clock in Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Interestingly enough, Casio chose to release this watch as a Pathfinder, which is their outdoor watch collection offering such features as digital compasses, altimeters, barometers and thermometers.
This watch is packed full of all four of these features and several more - including solar powered batteries, a backlight capable of being activated automatically at the flick of your wrist, world time display that can simulaneously show the time in two different time zones, 5 separate daily alarms, a countdown timer with an auto-repeat function, a 1/100-second stopwatch with splits and elapsed times, an hourly time signal, battery power indicator, power saving function and a perpetual calendar. Of course, with all of these features packed into the module of one watch, it is bigger than your average wristwatch. You aren't going to want this to be your everyday watch if you work in an office or a manual labor job. It is clearly a special function watch.
There are three models of the Casio Pathfinder PAW1200 Multi-Band Atomic Solar Triple Sensor watch. Two models are fitted with a resin strap, one is black (PAW1200-1V), the other is green (PAW1200-3V) Both of these models have a retail price of $300. There is also a model with a titanium bracelet (PAW1200T-7V). The titanium model retails for $350.
