how to size a watch

I haven't really been shopping for a watch since my early teens and I always went cheap... now I am looking for a somewhat better watch than the $45 specials... im looking to spend $150-200 on a watch but I seem to be running into a problem... every watch I have looked at in that range is 42-45mm.. they look HUGE on my wrist. is that just the style now? you cant even see the band when looking straight down on the watch... that cant be right.
is there some sort of guide to measure your wrist and come up with a range of how big the face should be?
I have always loved fossil watches... but they just dont have much of anything at all smaller than 42mm... are my wrists just ridiculously small?
