1775 NEW
by: Anonymous

if you guys have the same "glass ball + eagle holder" as me, it is definitely fake!! I do not think Omega existed in 1775! However, if you are looking for unique thing to sit at your table, go and grab one. You shall not pay more than $100 USD.

Omega Ball watch
by: Anonymous

I am a collector of these though I no longer collect them. I bought mine, I have several; at a NAWCC show.
They usually come with an Eagle watch holder. I have those too.

I have five jewels showing in the back of mine and on the front just Omega no other writing.

One has quit working and I will be taking it to a watchmaker to get cleaned or repaired.

Very sad to see all these Chinese fakes selling as Omega's as I am getting ready to sell my collection.

I bought a golden wrist watch from MUSKAT Oman with OMEGA printed with the monogram printed on the dial.It also has 1882 MADE printed on the dial.I knew for sure that it was not original, but my passion for collecting such wrist watches forced me to be a sucker,so I bought the same for 200 dollars.I may be a sucker, but I will not sell this watch for any amount.

fingers crossed
by: Anonymous

Recently my boyfriend and I came across a vintage Omega sphere watch at an antique store. It looks aged, but after doing some research we noticed there were a lot of fakes out there. The watch we found has all roman numerals around the face, the Omega symbol above OMEGA centered under the XII. There are two small circles, the one to the left is touching the IX and it has numbers the numbers 1-24 with dots inbetween. The circle to the right is touching the III and has the numbers 5-60 in multiples of 5. The minute, second and hour hand are simple looking. Towards the bottom it says "Made in Switzerland since 1775" and on either side of the VI it says "SWISS MADE". On the back, you can see gears and springs. There are also 5 pink/redish stones, or something. However, we can not find any numbers on the back.

Any one else come across one similar to this?

My son gave me a ball
by: Raybouder

I guess my crystal ball shaped clock is a fake too!
It has a half ball glass in the front and back bonded by a brass band around the center of the clock which is closer to 2 1/2 or 3 inches in diameter. The back glass ball part is flattened on one spot so that it may rest on a smooth surface for viewing the face, which has the only word on it (OMEGA) The works show gears moving and only 2 red jewels are seen. The winding stem has a round brass ring protecting it. It winds well and runs about a day between windings. It runs fast by any standard. Thanks, Ray.

I bought one of these off ebay for something like 5 dollars US or something like that, only mine says ST6 on the movement in back. Works fine and is a fun little watch to look at so doesn't much matter to me if its fake or not. If it is, at least its an attractive functional fake.

Mine from Macau
by: QuiPtr

Went to Macau near St Paul's Church and stumbled on an Omega Crystal Ball watch which had Swit zerland misspelled and hour, minute and second hands which are finely carved having a brass collar and knob with Roman numerals. Dated 1882 as well. Bought it for its functionality and interest. It's just now that it seems there are several others still in existence wheather real or fake.

Wow, I have two, different sizes !!
by: Anonymous

I bought two of the glass marble watches at an auction in Minnesota, one about 1" and one about 1 and 3/4" in diameter. The larger one runs well, the smaller one stops to rest occasionally. They are both dated 1882 and have Switzerland misspelled. I paid $30 apiece for them and have no idea their worth or authenticity, but I have never seen their like before, so whatever ! I can hold them in my hand, so they are tangible. If I live 200 years longer, at least they will be old.

Like I Was Thinking
by: Backpacking in China

Just ran across one of these watches in a tiny village in the Hunan Province of China named Dehang. A guy with a tiny shop and some old Chinese Trinkets had one of these outside his tiny shop sitting on a rug with some other "antiques". Our's has the Swit zerland mistake, and states "Made in 1882". I thought it was mighty suspicious, but after talking the guy down from 35 dollars to 7 dollars i figured it was at least a fun souvenir. The back is marked 357, it has a sweeping second hand, and a little red jewel on the back gears, and a blue jewel on the top. It is mighty cool, but now that I read this, I have no doubt it is fake.... but damn, a very nice fake.... I could probably sell it back in the states for 20 bucks in a heartbeat! thats a 13 dollar profit! lol... my girl loves it!

i bought my omega ball watch from a second hand shop in whitby. it was placed with other vintage pocket watches so i thought i had struck gold! the shop owner had a good assortment of old watches with a few fake rolex's thrown in for good measure. i bought it for 15 pounds anyway. the good news is it's a nice looking little object. the bad news is it's a fake. for the money they are a good looking little watch. if anyone offers you profit for your watch take it and buy another.

Hi Everyone,

All of your watches are fakes. I live in China and picked one up for $5 US. It is a great little repro, but you are a complete sucker if you pay any more than that like the suckers on Ebay who are dishing out $50 and up for the same repro. Don't believe any of the phony hand-me-down stories, either; it is just part of the sales pitch.

Glass Ball Watches-- Ladies face on back
by: Jodi Lovett

I live in China, Huizhou City. on a regular basis I now see The Omega , Swit zerland, 1885 or 1882.Such a gorgeous thing to look at, even if it is mass produced and soooooo fake. Since buying my first one, I have now seen varying sizes but I recently saw one dated 1775 or 1772, with a ladies face on the back , instead of the usual visible workings of the watch. it did not have the Swit zerland mistake. i think it had swiss made at the bottom.Anyway it looked more finished than the others i have seen. Didn't have the money on the day to buy it, haven't seen it since. Maybe it was the one that got away !!!!!! Wouldn't that be funny !!!

Real or Fake?
by: Lori

I, too, have a Omega ball watch from 1882, but looking at the official Omega website, the company didn't start until 1885. Also, there is a space in Swit zerland, which seems rather suspicious to me. I tend to believe these are copies, and who ever made them changed the date and put a space in Switzerland so they couldn't be sued!

Rare or Real ?
by: Anonymous

So yea I have had my little crystal ball for over four years now. As all mentioned, mine too has on the front of watch the:
1) the omega symbol
2) the OMEGA name written out
3) then small hand, large hand, and second hand.
4) below the hands in small type are the words,
swit zerland
made . 1882
5) has Roman Numeral numbers
6) also hangs from brass cradle the pivots.
7) nob on top is brass also
8) bell hangs w/ chain also below crystal clock

A friend of mine said he got mine in Madagascar for like 2USD. So they are valuable in the sense that they have come along way, just to grace the homes and streets of America. As do, so many others with dreams of being, an Entrepreneur.

I just bougth a watch just like the one you all describe, except mine says Shun Long where you all are seeing Omega. Mine also say Swit Zerland made - 1882.

I bought it off ebay because it looked cool, said it was new and it was only $15. I saw several Omega versions and they were classified as an Chinese antique. They sold for about $15 also. I saw them fakes so I bought my $15 one which looked just like the Chinese one with the Omega missing and Switerland miss spelled.

I do wish I could fine info on the watch. It's still cool

Omega ball watch, 1882
by: Valerie

I just bought mine at a New York City flea market yesterday for $25. Sounds like I may have overpaid! Mine has the same characteristics as what you've all described: sweep second hand. Omega logo and 'Switzerland 1882' on the face, blue stone on the winding knob, swivel cradle and bell with chains, 4 or 5 tiny pink stones nestled amongst the gears, and an engraving on the back that says ST6, alongside what might be a tiny drawing of something resembling an envelope.
Still no one with any value information?

Hi, I just got one of these for 10 pounds in an Essex Road antique stall in London. It was on a table full of stuff from China so I assume it came from there.

Would love to know more - it is hard to believe it's actually from 1882 as it works perfectly.

The mechanism on the back has several small pink stones in it, and the capital letters "SJL3" stamped into one of the parts.

The winding knob has a small blue stone.

bought one today in Hong Kong

I bought this watch today (October 2008) from a very small junk shop just off Holywood Road, Hong Kong - paid just under A$10 for it - tried the official Omega site and nothing. It matches exactly the descriptions above. Marble sized crystal ball, clearly marked Omega, Switzerland made 1882 on the front, movement visible through the back half of the sphere. Brass collar around the circumference of the watch. Blue "stone" on the top of the winding mechanism. mechanism has a number SJL3 "stamped" onto it. Little "bell" and chains suspended underneath. Would be great if someone could tell us more about these watches - real or fake - it is certainly an interesting piece

Early Omega Watch
by: Doug from Fla.

My guess is it is a repro. The reason I say this is there are too many to be found. I have one and the glass and metal are in like new condition. The hands look like they are stamped out and look new. Don't know if they could make them that uniform in 1882, don't think so. The metal hanger which attaches to the sides is missing from mine and I paid only $5.00 for it. The gears are magnified from the glass and are too neat and evenly cut. I do not think early watches had sweep minute hands either. Oh well it is fun to look at and got it cheap. It works well and keeps good time. In a bind you could also use it for a game of marbles.
