Is this the earliest Omega watch?

by robert dare
(salford england)

What year did Omega start production? I have a small fob watch dated 1882. It is about 1 inch, it is round like a glass marble, the back can be seen all the time with the works, the watch is in a cradle and can be turned, also the cradle has a loop for hanging, at the bottom there is bell on a chain. Is this one of the earlist watches made by Omega?

Omega ball watch, 1882
by: Valerie

I just bought mine at a New York City flea market yesterday for $25. Sounds like I may have overpaid! Mine has the same characteristics as what you've all described: sweep second hand. Omega logo and 'Switzerland 1882' on the face, blue stone on the winding knob, swivel cradle and bell with chains, 4 or 5 tiny pink stones nestled amongst the gears, and an engraving on the back that says ST6, alongside what might be a tiny drawing of something resembling an envelope.
Still no one with any value information?

just got one too
by: Elisha Sessions

Hi, I just got one of these for 10 pounds in an Essex Road antique stall in London. It was on a table full of stuff from China so I assume it came from there.

Would love to know more - it is hard to believe it's actually from 1882 as it works perfectly.

The mechanism on the back has several small pink stones in it, and the capital letters "SJL3" stamped into one of the parts.

The winding knob has a small blue stone.

bought one today in Hong Kong
by: Anonymous

I bought this watch today (October 2008) from a very small junk shop just off Holywood Road, Hong Kong - paid just under A$10 for it - tried the official Omega site and nothing. It matches exactly the descriptions above. Marble sized crystal ball, clearly marked Omega, Switzerland made 1882 on the front, movement visible through the back half of the sphere. Brass collar around the circumference of the watch. Blue "stone" on the top of the winding mechanism. mechanism has a number SJL3 "stamped" onto it. Little "bell" and chains suspended underneath. Would be great if someone could tell us more about these watches - real or fake - it is certainly an interesting piece

Early Omega Watch
by: Doug from Fla.

My guess is it is a repro. The reason I say this is there are too many to be found. I have one and the glass and metal are in like new condition. The hands look like they are stamped out and look new. Don't know if they could make them that uniform in 1882, don't think so. The metal hanger which attaches to the sides is missing from mine and I paid only $5.00 for it. The gears are magnified from the glass and are too neat and evenly cut. I do not think early watches had sweep minute hands either. Oh well it is fun to look at and got it cheap. It works well and keeps good time. In a bind you could also use it for a game of marbles.

I bought two watches like those mentioned above. One is 60cm across and the other is 50cm. Would really like to know if they are genuine or not.

I have one as well
by: Anonymous

I recently found a watch exactly the same as the ones you describe in a small 2nd-hand shop in Hong Kong, being this is Hong Kong and I paid less then GBP10.00 for it, I assumed it was a fake, but having read this page, I'm now not so sure, I also can find little information on it.

Glass ball omega watch
by: Anonymous

I too have one of those marble like watches that you can see the fuctions in the back, with the shaped hook on top & the small bells hanging from small chains at the bottom, I also have tried to look it up on the net & cannot find a thing, even with it clearly showing it says Omega, Switzerland made 1882 in the face of it.. It belong to my Great Grandfather, My Dad gave it to me, strangely it still works. Any information on it would be great.

I have the same watch
by: Anonymous

Hi there,

I have the exact same watch and I have checked the official Omega website and there is nothing on this pocket watch. I just want to know where you got it. The one I have was given to me by my father in-law. I wondering if this is a real antique watch or one of those fakes.
