The Omega Speedmaster 3572.50.00 Professional Moon Watch was discontinued. It has been replaced with the 3573.50.00.
The original model was made with Hesalite crystal and the new model uses sapphire crystal. In addition, the sapphire crystal has been given an anti-reflective treatment on both sides.
Hesalite was the original material used to comply with NASA requirements. If broken, Hesalite will not break into tiny fragments - unlike sapphire crystals. The dangers of tiny fragments of glass floating in the weightlessness of a vehicle in space are rather obvious.
The downside of using Hesalite is that it scratches much easier than sapphire crystal. Thus, since most owners are not planning to wear their Omega Speedmaster Professional watch in outer space (yet!), Omega made this one change to the crystal.
As a result of this change, the new Omega Speedmaster 3573.50.00 is a little more water resistant - with a rating of 50 meters as opposed to the old model which is rated as water resistant to 33 meters.
Both watches use the Omega Caliber 1863 manual winding chronograph movement in a stainless steel case with a stainless steel bracelet. They also have an exhbition see-through caseback. The old model is extremely difficult to find. When we last checked using the watch finder search box at the top of the page, we were not able to find any.
The new Omega Speedmaster 3573.50.00 has a list price of $3,695. However, you can find it for much less than that at Amazon.com.
