The Omega Speedmaster is called the "Moon Watch" for one very simple reason - it is the only watch to ever be worn on the Moon. In 1965, the Omega Speedmaster was flight-qualified by NASA.
Over the last forty years, this collection has been the only wristwatch to withstand all of the severe tests administered to it by this space agency. It is the one and only official chronograph for NASA and the Russian space program. The Omega Speedmaster has been the most tested watch in (and above) the world.
Several models of the Omega Speedmaster collection are equipped with a Hesalite crystal. This was requested by NASA. A Hesalite crystal differs from a sapphire crystal in that it will not break into tiny fragments if it is broken.
While this is an important element in a zero-gravity environment, there are drawbacks. Hesalite crystals are made of acrylic and are not as scratch-resistant as sapphire crystals.
The Omega Speedmaster collection is composed of nine different models - Reduced, Day-Date, Moon Phase, Date, Broad Arrow, Racing Chronometer, Legend, X-33 and the latest addition, Professional.
