Replica Watches - what's all the fuss about!
According to recent statistics from Wordtracker, the major search engines receive requests for the terms "replica watches" and "replica watch" over 60,000 times a month! Just to put that in context, the general keyword "watches" receives about 122,000 requests a month. That makes replica watches the second most popular watch-related search term!
That begs the question - what is the big deal about replica watches? My initial guess is that most of these searches are conducted by watch buyers and they are looking for a reputable dealer to buy "fake watches" as some people like to call them.
By the way, why would someone want to buy a fake watch? I mean, taken literally, a fake watch is a watch that doesn't work...hmmm!
Remember the old cassette tape TV commercial - "Is it live or is it Memorex?" If that was a watch commercial today, the tag line would be "Is it a replica or is it a Rolex?" That's because the quality of replica watches has improved dramatically over the last 10 years.
It used to be that the average Joe could easily spot a fake when the counterfeiters used cheap materials and the workmanship was rather sloppy. That has all changed. The replica watch business is now a multi-billion dollar industry! It is estimated that for every one original Rolex watch that is manufactured today, there are ten replicas made.
Today's imitation watches are using high-grade materials, swiss movements and lasers to create copies that are almost exact duplicates to their original name-brand counterparts. Some knockoffs have imitation boxes and even fake warranty papers made to look like the real deal.
These products are being marketed by thousands of dealers through websites, online auctions and forums. Even some of the watch review sites today are simply fronts for these merchants - with a listing of recommended dealers being their websites and the competition getting listed as being unrecommended or even frauds. Boy, talk about fraud. They ought to know - they have it mastered!
One of the latest twists in the replica watch industry is the manufacture of some of the most popular vintage watches such as the Paul Newman Daytona and the James Bond Submariner.
Caveat Emptor - Let the Buyer Beware! This Latin phrase applies here...big time. Unfortunately, there are too many folks who thought they were buying an "authentic" watch and are only finding out after the purchase that they are actually owners of a replica watch.
