No other watch brand name garners such recognition and attention. Rolex watches have earned this reputation from achieving a long list of "firsts" in the watch industry spanning back over 100 years. In 1953 Rolex introduced the most popular Rolex watch, the Oyster Perpetual Submariner, which was the first watch to be rated as water resistant to 100 meters.
There is no question that Rolex watches have continuously set the standard for precision, performance and reliability. However, if you want to experience that standard firsthand, it comes with a price. There are basically two markets for Rolex watches - new and "used" (also called pre-owned and vintage). List prices for brand new Rolex watches start around $3,000. Many popular pre-owned Rolex watches will still command high four figure price tags.
New Rolex Watches
You aren't going to find a brand new Rolex watch on the internet - at least not from an authorized dealer. According to the official Legal Statement on the Rolex website:
"Genuine Rolex products are sold through Official Rolex Jewellers and are not available on the Internet."
As a matter of fact, you can't even find a listing of authorized Rolex watch dealers on the internet. You can find a phone number on the official Rolex website and they can tell you who the authorized Rolex watch dealers are in your area.
If you are interested in buying a new Rolex watch, the choice is simple - find a local authorized dealer and pay the price they are asking.
Used Rolex Watches
If you want to save a few thousand dollars and are willing to own a used Rolex watch - it gets much more complicated. Since Rolex watches are so popular and the cost of a Rolex is about 50 to 100 times more expensive than your average Citizen or Seiko, an entire industry has emerged to try to fill that void. If you are venturing into the vintage Rolex watch market, the most important word of encouragement I can give you is "Know your watch!"
If the old adage "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" holds true, then Rolex should be extremely flattered. Millions of replica Rolex watches are manufactured every year. Please note that the manufacture of items using trademarks and copyrights without permission of the holders is illegal. For years, these replicas were really no threat to the watch industry because the quality was so poor that a child could spot a fake with little effort.
Recently however, the technology and the techniques being used to generate replica watches has reached new levels. Many manufacturers, including Rolex, have joined forces with government officials to confiscate and prosecute makers and distributors of replica watches.
This is why it is so important to really know what you are doing if you are buying or selling pre-owned Rolex watches. If you are not willing to do your homework, you could find yourself being the proud owner of a non-working fake Rolex and a few thousand dollars lighter in the wallet. Not good!
