The Seiko Marine Master is one of the watches in the Seiko Professional Diver Collection. This collection features water resistance beyond 200 meters and was developed for use in saturation diving. Diving at these depths requires a special gasket and case to maintain a sufficient water pressure seal. The Marine Master is water resistant to 300 meters.
While many folks refer to all of the Seiko Professional Dive watches as Seiko Marine Master watches, there is only one model that actually says "MARINEMASTER" on the dial. It is Reference (Model) number SBDX001 and runs on the 26 jewel 8L35 Automatic movement. This is also the only regular production Seiko Professional Dive watch that uses this movement. There are two limited edition models from the Historical Collection and two Seiko Landmasters that also use this movement:
The Seiko Marine Master is no small watch. The one piece stainless steel case measures 42mm by 14mm (approx. 1.68 by .56 inches) and weighs 210 grams (over eight ounces) with the standard stainless steel bracelet. That is a very heavy watch, weighing almost twice as much as my stainless steel Casio Atomic Solar G-Shock, even though the size is approximately the same. The extra weight is in the heavy duty double-folding safety locking expandable bracelet.
It also comes with a rubber strap which will reduce the overall weight dramatically. It comes with a unidirectional coin-edge bezel that has a Lumibrite dot at the "60" position. I did read some comments that the bezel could be rather easy to turn but you can get it tightened up if necessary. The crystal is domed Hardlex with anti-reflective coating. The crown screws down for increased water resistance. The dial and hands have Lumibrite fill. There is a date window at the three o'clock position.
This watch has received very favorable reviews from current owners. Interestingly enough, one owner actually reported that it has been accurate right out of the box within less than one second per day for over four months and when he had it checked out on a timing machine it was dead on. Pretty impressive!
The list price for the Seiko Marine Master is approximately $2,200 (US Dollars).
It is clear that the Seiko Marine Master is a favorite of those who own it and this watch truly sets a standard for other automatic dive watches to follow.
