Started as Waterbury Clock in the second half of the 19th Century, Timex has long been known for manufacturing affordable clocks and watches for working class Americans. The "Yankee" pocket watch that they manufactured in the early 20th Century was the most popular pocket watch in the world, with nearly forty million sold for only one dollar.

In 1933 Waterbury Clock manufactured the very first clocks and watches featuring a brand new cartoon character - Mickey Mouse. Over two million Mickey Mouse watches for children were manufactured and sold for only $1.50. These are now some of the most highly valued collectible watches around.

During World War Two the company was re-named to U.S. Time Company. In 1950 the world's first "Timex" was manufactured and quickly became known for its toughness and durability with John Cameron Swayze's famous line - "takes a licking and keeps on ticking". By the end of the 1950's one in every three watches sold was a Timex watch.

By the mid-70's half of all watches sold in the U.S. were Timex watches and the name was instantly recognized by all. Timex is the only U.S. based watch maker that survived the tough times of the 1970's with the advent of the digital quartz movement watch and the onslaught from Japanese watch companies into the inexpensive watch market.
