Watch Dealers
There are literally thousands of watch dealers out there for all kinds of watches - antique watches, vintage watches, new watches, Swiss watches, pocket watches, watch winders, watch cases...well, you get the idea! So, if you are shopping for a watch, how do you know who you can trust, and even more importantly, what watch dealers can you NOT trust?
If you try and do a search on google, yahoo or msn for "watch dealers" or "authentic watch dealers" you will actually find some of the good ones buried in the listings. Unfortunately, you will have to weed through lots of junk in the process and even then there are several excellent dealers that won't even show up!
For example, did you know that one of the largest seller of watches on the internet today is Amazon.com
No matter what watch dealer you choose to do business with, here are a few tips you should consider.
Customer Reviews or Ratings
Personally I believe this is one of the most important factors. Nothing speaks louder than a customer rating, both positive AND negative. Don't just go by some reviews that the watch dealer puts on their website - while they may be genuine, you just have no way of confirming that.
There are many independent review systems in place today - including eBay feedback ratings, Yahoo Shopping, Amazon Feedback and more. Secure checkout
Some folks I know still think it is too dangerous to shop on the internet. However, if a merchant is using 128-bit encryption or higher (technical term for hacker proof) then you can shop with confidence. You should always check before you enter any credit card information to make sure the page is secure. There are two ways you can do this.
First, look in the lower right hand corner of your browser window. If the page is secure, you will see a little "closed" lock. If the lock icon is "opened" the page is not safe from hackers. The other way you can check is look at the url of the page you are on in the address window at the top of your browser. If the page is secure the url will start with "https://". If the page is NOT secure it will read "http://" (the "s" is missing).
Return policy
Any merchant worth working with should have some type of satisfaction guarantee with a minimum time frame of 15 to 30 days and a full refund less expenses if you return the item in new condition. Some of the larger merchants will also refund your shipping charges (or not reduce the refund if you got free shipping). Don't expect this from the independent, family-owned businesses.
Some merchants will refer to a "restocking fee". The reality is that merchants incur a credit card processing fee of approximately 2.5% every time they process a transaction. So if you buy an item for $100 and then return it, the merchant will have spent $5. With margins shrinking into the single digits, expect a "net" refund if you return an order.
